Pensieri Ludici: Catacombs
Stamattina anche se è Sabato mi metto al computer. Per il primo anno da quando sono nati i miei due figli sono a scuola anche di sabato e mia moglie al lavoro e quindi mi trovo davanti 4 ore di tempo inatteso, incontaminato … mi sono allora deciso a scrivere un po’ di articoli e recensioni e nella mia lista di cose da fare ci sono alcuni pezzi per ILSA Magazine sui giochi di destrezza e ho al mio fianco Catacombs!
Per chi non lo conoscesse ancora Catacombs è un bellissimo gioco di esplorazione caverne e combattimenti in cui i personaggi devono esplorare stanze pieni di mostri che man mano si parano loro davanti per impedire di raggiungere l’obbiettivo finale. Non sembra nulla di particolarmente originale o innovativo se si trascura il fatto che i personaggi ed i mostri sono rappresentati da dischetti di legno che vengono “criccati” e tutte le regole del gioco ruotano intorno a questa meccanica: la palla di fuoco è un piccolo dischetto con cui colpire i nemici mentre l’incantesimo scudo è un bel pataccone di legno che si frappone tra il mago e i suoi avversari.
Catacombs è, a tutti gli effetti, un gioco da tavolo: ha una plancia, delle carte, dei personaggi. Ma giochi come Villa Paletti ? Jenga ? Pitch Car ? Sono giochi da tavolo ? E tutti quei giochi che hanno come componentistica solo delle carte ? Quale è il confine tra Magic e Cesare e Cleopatra o Le Città Perdute ? Sono così diversi ? E il confine tra gioco da tavolo e gioco di ruolo ?
Insomma, quale è il confine tra un gioco da tavolo ed altro ? Angiolino e Sidoti nel loro fantastico Dizionario dei Giochi, opera omnia che sempre mi accompagna nel mio divagare ludico, risolvono il problema dicendo “Giochi da tavolo, detti anche giochi da tavola, al giorno d’oggi sono i giochi in scatola prodotti industrialmente che si praticano appunto su un tavolo”. Per oggi mi posso accontentare anche se volendo sottilizzare ci sarebbe molto da dire perchè, secondo questa definizione, un gioco da tavolo autoprodotto non è un gioco da tavolo mentre un gioco di ruolo con i manuali contenuti in una scatola lo sarebbe …

For the first year since they were born my two children are both at school on Saturdays and my wife is working too and then I got four hours of unexpected free time … I then decided to write some articles and reviews and on my list of things to do there are some review for ILSA Magazine on dexterity games and I’m faced with Catacombs!
For those who do not know it yet Catacombs is a beautiful game of exploration and fighting in caves where the characters have to explore rooms full of monsters trying to prevent them from reaching the ultimate goal. It does not seem anything particularly original or innovative, if we neglect the fact that the characters and monsters are represented by wooden disks that are “flicked” and all the rules of the game are built around this great and simple mechanic: the fireball is a small disk while the spell shield is a nice great wooden disk that stands between the wizard and his opponents.
Catacombs is, to all intents and purposes, a board game: has boards, cards, characters, rules. But games like Villa Paletti? Jenga? Pitch Car? Are these board games? And all those games with only cards? What is the boundary between Magic and Caesar and Cleopatra or The Lost Cities? They are so different? And the line between a board game and a role playing games ?
So, what is the boundary between a board game and somthing else ? Angiolino and Sidoti in their great “Dizionario dei Giochi” that always accompanies me in my playful thoughts, solve the problem by saying “Board games, also known as table games, nowadays are the games with a box that are industrially produced and played on a table. ” Today I can be satisfied even if there is much to say because, according to this definition, a self-produced board game is not a board game and a role-playing game with the manuals contained in a box it would be …
